BBQ for Good was formed from a simple idea:
great barbecue brings people together.

What started as a passion for BBQ grew into a mission to share knowledge, build community, and give back. We believe that teaching people how to cook great barbecue creates connection, builds confidence, and strengthens community.

At the same time, we recognize that many young people lack access to educational and enrichment opportunities that can shape their future. BBQ for Good bridges these ideas by using community-driven events and education to create opportunities for youth.

About BBQ for Good

OUR MISSION

BBQ for Good exists to expand access to educational opportunities for youth by using barbecue as a tool for connection, learning, and community.

We believe that when people gather around food, something bigger happens. Skills are shared. Confidence grows. Doors open.

OUR VISION

We envision a community where:

  • Young people have access to meaningful educational experiences

  • Learning feels hands-on, practical, and empowering

  • Barbecue becomes a bridge between people, not a barrier to entry

  • By teaching professional-level barbecue using everyday equipment, we make high-quality learning accessible, approachable, and rooted in real life.

What Makes BBQ for Good Different

Barbecue can feel intimidating. Expensive equipment. Complicated techniques. A sense that you need to “already know” what you’re doing.

We’re here to change that.

BBQ for Good focuses on:

  • Home BBQ-ers — not professionals, not pitmasters, just people who want to get better

  • Accessible equipment — what you already have in your backyard

  • Real skills — timing, technique, and confidence

About Marcos A. Gonzales, Executive Director

Marcos A. Gonzales is a Certified Kansas City Barbecue Society judge with a deep respect for the craft of barbecue and the community it brings together.

He is best known for his 24-hour smoked brisket, with ribs and chicken that hold their own at any table. His approach is rooted in patience, precision, and a belief that great barbecue is something to be shared.

BBQ for Good began with a simple moment at home. When his wife, a local ballet teacher, was looking for ways to help her students pursue their dreams, Marcos offered what he could: “I can cook.” What started as a single act of support grew into a tradition, and that tradition became BBQ for Good.

Today, Marcos leads with that same spirit. His work is driven by the idea that something as familiar as barbecue can open doors, bring people together, and create real opportunities for young people.

His barbecue is exceptional. His commitment to others is what built this.

Board of Directors

BBQ for Good is guided by a Board of Directors committed to its mission and long-term impact. The Board provides governance, strategic direction, and oversight to ensure the organization remains aligned with its charitable purpose and continues to grow responsibly.

  • Why BBQ for Good:
BBQ for Good helps young people. I believe every kid should have access to opportunities, regardless of their financial situation. The arts can build confidence, discipline, and a sense of purpose, and it’s rewarding to play even a small role in that growth. I also value giving back to the community and supporting programs that create positive paths for youth. Being involved allows me the opportunity to contribute to something meaningful while helping young people pursue something they’re passionate about.
